Bedford Modern student praised for helping man who collapsed

A student from Bedford Modern School has been praised for his part in helping a man who had collapsed in Bedford.

Edward Decesare who is in Year 13 at the school, was praised by Bedfordshire Fire Control after helping a man who collapsed in Clapham Road, on Friday, April 30.

Edward saw the man collapse and called an ambulance. He then stayed with the man and spoke to him to find out his name and where he lived, before passing on all the information to the paramedics when they arrived.

He said: "I was on my way home from school when I noticed a gentleman clearly in distress outside Sainsbury’s.

"I approached him to ask if everything was okay, at which point he collapsed and I helped lower him to the ground. At this point I called the ambulance.

"I found out his name and the retirement home he lives at, and called the home to find out any medical conditions he suffered from.

"When the ambulance arrived I relayed the information to the paramedics and assisted them when needed.

“I’ve not had any formal training in First Aid but I have had experience working in a care home through the BMS Enrichment programme which has given me the confidence to deal with this situation.”

Bedfordshire Fire Control (@Beds_FireCtrl) praised Edward on Twitter. It tweeted: "Earlier, our #Harrold Co-Responders attended a gentleman who had collapsed in Clapham Road, #Bedford. He was left in the hands of paramedics, but we just wanted to praise a young male from @BedfordModern who stayed with the gentleman and gave a very detailed handover to our crews."
